A good YouTube thumbnail should explain the video quickly, even when it appears at a small size. You do not need to fill it with arrows, effects, and long sentences. A clear subject, short headline, and strong contrast are usually enough.
In this guide, you will learn how to make a YouTube thumbnail with Canvix using the editor’s built-in YouTube size preset, text styles, backgrounds, uploads, stock images, YouTube thumbnail importer, layers, and download options.

Before You Start
Decide what the thumbnail needs to communicate. You should be able to complete this sentence:
This video is interesting because it shows ________.
The missing part should become the main visual idea. It could be a person, product, game character, result, screenshot, transformation, or important moment from the video.
Prepare any images you want to use before opening the editor. This may include:
- A clear photograph of the presenter
- A screenshot from the video
- A product or object
- A logo or small brand element
- A short headline
1. Choose the YouTube Thumbnail Preset
Open the Canvix online editor. At the top of the editor, click Template Options.
The Template Options window contains a Preset Size dropdown. Open it and find the YouTube section, then choose:
YouTube Thumbnail (1280 × 720)
The live preview updates to show the wide thumbnail shape. Click Apply Size to use it.
You can also enter a custom width and height manually. The Lock ratio switch keeps the width and height proportional while you resize.
Important: Canvix also has a Fit Canvas option above the canvas. That tool is useful when you want to crop a canvas around its objects, but you normally should not use it at the end of this project because it could change the fixed 1280 × 720 thumbnail dimensions.
2. Choose a Background
Click BG in the left toolbar. The background panel includes four tabs:
- Solid
- Gradient
- Pattern
- Image
Solid background
Choose a solid colour when you want a clean thumbnail with strong text and one main subject. A simple colour can make the subject easier to recognise than a busy photograph.
Gradient background
The Gradient tab lets you choose a linear or radial gradient, change its colours, and adjust the gradient radius. This is useful when you want depth without adding another object to the design.
Image background
Open the Image tab when you want a photograph or graphic as the full background. You can upload an image, choose from your images or library, use Pixabay results, or add a background from an image URL.
When text sits over a detailed background, make the area behind the text darker, brighter, or less busy so the words remain readable.
3. Add the Main Image
Click Images in the left toolbar. The panel separates images into:
- Stock Images
- Uploads
- Library
Use Uploads for your own presenter photo, product image, screenshot, or game artwork. Use Stock Images when you need a supporting photograph. You can search directly inside the panel and add a result to the canvas.
After adding an image, drag it into position and resize it using the handles around the object. Keep the main subject large enough to recognise when the thumbnail is reduced.
Use the selected-image controls
When an image is selected, Canvix shows image controls such as Edit, Adjust, Effects, and Arrange.
You can use these controls to:
- Change the image opacity
- Add or adjust a shadow
- Duplicate the image
- Lock it in place
- Move it forward or backward
- Set it as the background
- Delete it
Canvix also includes Perspective Warp and Mesh Warp controls for more specialised image adjustments.
Optional: Import a YouTube Thumbnail
Canvix has a useful YouTube import tool inside the Elements panel.
- Click Elements in the left toolbar.
- Open the YouTube tab.
- Choose Thumbnail.
- Paste the YouTube video URL.
- Choose the thumbnail quality: Default, Medium, High, or Max Resolution.
- Choose how it should be added, such as Canvas Layer.
- Click Import Thumbnail.
This can be useful when you are updating one of your existing thumbnails, comparing an old version with a new design, or using a thumbnail from your own video as a starting reference.
Only import and reuse images you own or have permission to edit.
4. Add the Thumbnail Text
Click Text in the left toolbar. You can click Add a text box or choose one of the visible text styles, such as Heading or Bold Impact.
After adding the text, select it on the canvas and replace the placeholder wording with your own headline.
Keep the headline short
Use a few words that add something useful to the video title. For example:
- Before You Buy
- I Tested It
- Easy Thumbnail Guide
- My Honest Results
- From Blurry to Sharp
Avoid copying the complete video title onto the thumbnail. The title and thumbnail appear together, so they should support each other rather than say exactly the same thing.
Make the wording readable
Use a large font, strong contrast, and enough empty space around the words. If the background is busy, move the text to a quieter area or place a shape behind it.
Check the design at a smaller zoom level. If the headline becomes difficult to read, shorten it or make it larger.
5. Arrange the Layers
A thumbnail often contains a background, main image, text, and one or two supporting elements. Their order matters.
Select an object and open Arrange. Canvix provides controls including:
- Bring forward
- Send backward
- Bring to front
- Send to back
- Lock
- Duplicate
For example, place a shape behind the headline, keep the presenter or product in front of the background, and lock finished objects so they are not moved accidentally.
If text needs to overlap a person or product, arrange the layers carefully rather than flattening the whole design too early.
6. Add Finishing Details
Use vectors sparingly
The Vectors panel contains categories such as basic shapes, dividers, abstract graphics, badges, ecommerce elements, arrows, banners, holiday items, buttons, and social graphics.
An arrow or circle can help direct attention, but it should point to something genuinely important.
Use Draw for simple annotations
The Draw tool includes lines, rectangles, circles, pencil tools, arrows, and other drawing options. This is useful for highlighting a screenshot or marking a specific part of the thumbnail.
Use AI only when it improves the idea
The AI panel includes options for generating images, editing an image, and Cartoonify. In the generator, you can enter a prompt, choose an aspect shape, and generate an image with Gemini.
When an image is selected, the Edit Image With AI panel also shows tools such as AI Edit, Upscale, Cartoonify, and Template.
AI tools use credits and require an account. They are optional. A good screenshot, photograph, or product image is often all a thumbnail needs.
Do a small-size test
Use the zoom control below the canvas to reduce the preview. Check:
- Can you identify the subject immediately?
- Can you read the headline?
- Is one element clearly more important than the others?
- Does the thumbnail still make sense without reading the video title?
7. Download the Thumbnail
Click Download in the top header. The Download your design window shows the available export options.
In the current editor, the download window includes:
- JPG — a quick download for drafts, previews, and social posts
- PNG — with PNG export options
- WebP — a web-ready format
- PDF — intended for print and document use
- AI Video — for animating a design rather than exporting a standard thumbnail
For a YouTube thumbnail, JPG is usually suitable for a photograph-heavy design. PNG can be useful when the thumbnail contains screenshots, sharp text, logos, and flat graphic elements.
The recording shows JPG as the free standard download, while some other formats and AI features depend on your account or plan.
YouTube Thumbnail Checklist
- The canvas is 1280 × 720 pixels.
- The main subject is easy to recognise.
- The headline is short and readable.
- The background does not compete with the subject.
- Important objects are arranged in the correct layer order.
